Cooperation with SAIC Volkswagen, VAMA&GONVVAMA's innovative steel programme to promote electrification of cars

2023-06-25

On March 29th. VAMA & GONVAMA brought innovative steel solutions to the experts of SAIC Volkswagen to discuss the groundbreaking applications of automotive steel to cars in the context of the huge growth of dual-carbon and electric vehicles.

"Advanced high-strength steel offers endless possibilities for body design." "In the future, we hope we can open up more in-depth technology exchanges and collaborate early on in the development of new models with the goal of producing greener and more fuel-efficient products in the electrification process," VAMA CMO Jurgen Cobbaut said in a welcome speech.

VAMA is committed to the localization of high value-added products in the field of body material application, continuous innovation and upgrading in the field of new steel research and development. VAMA Customer Technical Support Director Michael Yang introduced to the guests, "The upcoming VAMA 2 galvanizing line will also introduce ArcelorMittal's third generation cold formed high strength steel Fortiform®, which has high strength and excellent stamping performance."

"The multi-part integration solution (MPI) based on hot-formed aluminum-silicon coated steel, combined with laser welding and thermoforming processes, is leading to the new future of large-part integration," said Raimond Liu, product manager at GONVVAMA, referring to the growing trend towards larger, modular and integrated body parts. Through technological upgrades, ArcelorMittal has introduced a heat-formed one-piece door ring based on the upper body, an upgraded version of the inner and outer double door rings and front and rear door rings, as well as an integrated rear body skeleton based on the lower body, which effectively reduces the carbon footprint while greatly improving the production efficiency of the complete vehicle processing by transforming the multi-track into a single track. It can achieve the perfect balance between body weight reduction, performance and cost.

Liu Xiang, EVI engineer at ArcelorMittal in China said that the core components of battery packs for electric vehicles, ArcelorMittal has been updating and upgrading its steel battery pack solutions since 2017. In the latest integrated solution, for the first time, aluminum-silicon coated thermoformed steel has been applied to the battery pack structure, including the tray and the bottom shield, and the feasibility of applying thermoformed steel to the mass production of battery packs has been verified. Its fire resistance, air tightness, anti-corrosion and so on fully meet the requirements of the national standard, fundamentally ensuring the safety of batteries and electric vehicle collision performance.

"All of the innovative steel solutions we share today have been locally 'transformed' with the introduction of VAMA and GONVVAMA, ArcelorMittal's joint ventures in China," Yannick Yin, GONVVAMA's CTO, said at the end of the conference. "As part of SAIC Volkswagen's supply chain, we will continue to export new products and technologies, work together to meet the cost and performance challenges of the current market environment, and bring lighter, more environmentally friendly and cost-effective vehicles to consumers."
